“Search has always been the heartbeat of what we do at The Belford Group.”

When someone asked me last week, “Do you know a good SEO company?” I laughed. Not because it was a bad question, but because it reminded me how often people only know one part of what I do.

Some know me as an executive coach for family-owned businesses. Others know I’ve stepped in to lead businesses over the years. Some know I’m serving as Chief Marketing Officer for a couple of companies. Many know I’ve written two books and speak on a regular basis. And most people just know I travel. A lot.

What they may not realize is that search has always been at the core of what we do at The Belford Group. It’s not the flashiest part of the story, but it’s the foundation. Search is how people find you. It’s how they start to trust you. It’s a big part of how they decide if you’re the right fit.

And now, in the age of AI, it’s no longer just about SEO. It’s about positioning your business to be visible no matter how someone searches. Whether it’s Google, Siri, Alexa, or ChatGPT, your clients are still asking the same question: “Who can help me?”

Why Positioning Matters

Search has never just been about keywords. It’s always been about positioning.

Your clients aren’t typing your internal lingo. They’re typing the words that describe their pain. They’re searching from a place of frustration or confusion or urgency.

The businesses that show up and speak that language? Those are the ones that get found and trusted.

Advertising still matters. It creates awareness and helps reach people before they’re even ready to name their problem. But search is different. Search is someone raising their hand and asking for help in real time.

The AI Shift

Search is changing again. Your next client may not go to Google at all. They may just ask Siri. Or Alexa. Or ChatGPT.

That’s why back in May 2022—months before ChatGPT went public—we started weaving AI into our process. At first, it was about saving time. But we quickly saw that AI isn’t just another tool. It’s changing how people ask questions, how they talk about their needs, and what they expect from a business that claims to have answers.

For more than three years, we’ve been incorporating conversational AI into client strategies. Because the way people search today sounds a lot more like how they talk.

AI understands natural language. That makes positioning more important than ever.

If your business isn’t framed in your clients’ words, you won’t be found.
