“We’ve tried everything and nothing is working.”
I hear some version of that sentence in almost every first conversation I have with a new client. And I get it. You’ve posted on social media. You’ve sent emails. Maybe you’ve run some ads. You’re doing the things you’re supposed to do and the phone is not ringing the way you expected.
Here is what I’ve learned after 27 years of marketing work: it’s almost never true that nothing is working. Usually something is working. The problem is that one of the four foundations is off, and when that happens, everything built on top of it produces friction instead of results.
The Four Foundations
The first is audience. If you are talking to the wrong people, or worse, talking to everyone, your message lands nowhere. Marketing that tries to reach everybody connects with nobody. The most important decision in any marketing strategy is not what to say or where to say it. It’s who you are saying it to. When you know exactly who your dream client is, every other decision gets easier because you have a filter for it.
The second is message. This is where most businesses quietly go wrong. They lead with what they want to say about themselves instead of what the customer needs to hear. Your history, your credentials, your process, those matter, but they are not what makes someone decide to call you. What makes them call is the feeling that you understand their situation better than they expected. If your message is about you, it’s the wrong message.
The third is channel. Even a great message aimed at the right audience does nothing if it’s showing up where those people aren’t. I’ve worked with professional services businesses that were spending their entire marketing budget on Instagram while their best clients were reading industry newsletters and attending chamber events. Knowing your audience means knowing where they actually spend their time and attention.
The fourth is system. This is the one nobody wants to talk about. You can have the right audience, the right message, and the right channel, and still get inconsistent results if there’s no repeatable system behind the work. When marketing depends on whoever has time that week, it stops and starts. When it runs on a system, it compounds. This is often where clients decide to engage with The Belford Group to ensure consistent message is being delivered even when no one has time.
How to Tell Which One Is Your Problem
The fastest diagnostic I know is to trace your last five good clients back to their source. How did they find you? What did they say when you asked why they chose you? What did they know about you before they called?
If you can’t answer those questions, that’s the first problem. You don’t have enough information yet to know what’s actually working. The fix is to start asking.
If you can answer them and the answers point to one source, that’s your signal. Double down on what’s actually working before you try to fix everything else.
Most businesses are one focused adjustment away from marketing that works. They just need to know which adjustment to make.
